# When is an AI automation agency worth hiring?

**When a workflow involves messy documents or free text, many edge cases, audit or approval requirements, needs to be maintained by your team afterwards, and consumes enough time to justify a build (Sudo Sapient's rule of thumb is 20+ team hours per week).**

Hire outside builders when the workflow is clear and valuable but you lack senior AI engineers who have shipped evals, guardrails and integrations before. Check that they work on your real data from the first weeks, that they will write down what in production means, and that you will own the code, prompts and evals at handoff. If you plan to build AI into your core product for years, invest in your own team alongside them.
