# What is the difference between AI automation and RPA?

**RPA repeats fixed steps by operating user interfaces and suits legacy systems without APIs. AI automation uses models to handle variable, unstructured inputs such as emails and documents. Many processes combine both with API-based workflow tools.**

RPA replays fixed clicks and keystrokes across applications, so it is cheap and predictable on stable, structured tasks and brittle when screens or inputs change. AI automation adds models for the steps that need reading or judgement, such as understanding an email or extracting fields from an unfamiliar invoice. Many good systems combine both: rules and RPA for deterministic steps, a model for the judgement step, and a human queue for low-confidence cases.
